Headgear, retainers, bionators, the Frankel Appliance, and
the Invisalign System are all examples of removable appliances.
Headgear-an external appliance,
aids in guiding favorable growth and development.
Frankel Appliance-affects the jaw and dental arch.
Retainer-maintains teeth as they settle into their
proper positions.
Invisalign System-helps straighten teeth without
brackets or wires.
Bionator-influences jaw growth and controls bite.
Active Retainer-aligns teeth.
Placement
Because a removable appliance is not attached to the teeth,
the success of this type of orthodontic treatment depends
on patient cooperation. We advise patients to wear certain
removable appliances at all times, including while eating
or sleeping. Remember, the more the
appliance is worn, the less tight and uncomfortable it will
feel.
Care and Maintenance
Remove the appliance when brushing teeth. Guide the toothbrush
across all surfaces of the teeth, while angling the brush
towards the gums to clean under the gum line. Floss between
teeth, scraping the surfaces of the teeth by moving the floss
up and down. Do not force the floss between teeth, as this
can damage gums
.
Caring for a removable appliance is an essential part of treatment.
Don't eat hard, sticky, or sweet foods while wearing the device.
Keep the appliance clean, it can gather plaque and food just
like teeth! Brush and rinse the inside and outside of the
appliance, using toothpaste or liquid soap, after every meal.
If an appliance is lost or broken, contact our office for
an appointment.
